The New York Times reported that drugs, alcohol, and suicide together claimed more than 150,000 American lives in 2017. The grim statistic, attributed to two public health nonprofit groups, was based on mortality data compiled by the U.S. CDC. Suicides accounted for over 47,000 of these deaths.
