Dr. Atsushi Kamiya’s research aims to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and depression. Leveraging his expertise in basic neurobiology and backgrounds in clinical psychiatry, he investigates how environmental risk factors, such as social stress, teen cannabis use, and surgical stress in aging, in combination with genetic predispositions, impact stress-related signaling pathways, including immune and inflammatory processes, that contribute to aberrant brain function and lead to disease psychopathology. Dr. Kamiya’s mission is to identify critical molecular pathways and novel therapeutic targets to guide the development of novel pharmacological interventions. Ultimately, he seeks to develop mechanism-based strategies for the prevention and treatment of psychiatric disorders.
