Dr. Malhotra’s research group focuses on identifying the biological underpinnings of schizophrenia and the mechanism of action of antipsychotic drugs. His group has identified several genes associated with increased risk for developing the disorder, determined their relationship to important clinical manifestations of illness, including cognitive impairment, and examined the role of genetic factors in predicting individual responses to pharmacological treatment. His group published the first genome-wide association study of schizophrenia and developed a new analytic strategy to assess these data. A recent project provides new evidence for the role of specific genetic factors in vulnerability to antipsychotic drug-induced weight gain, a common side effect of treatment.
Following his research fellowship at the NIMH, Dr. Malhotra moved to the Zucker-Hillside Hospital, where he developed an internationally recognized molecular genetics program focused on the major neuropsychiatric disorders.

Who
We Are
The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is a global nonprofit organization focused on improving the understanding, prevention and treatment of psychiatric and mental illnesses.
Our
Impact
Beginning in 1987, the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation was providing seed money to neuroscientists to invest in “out of the box” research that the government and other sources were unwilling to fund. Today, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is still the leading, private philanthropy in the world in this space.
Our
People
