Dr. Javitt’s research focuses on brain mechanisms underlying negative symptoms and cognitive deficits in schizophrenia, with particular emphasis on NMDA receptors (receptors for glutamate, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in learning and memory), neurophysiological assessment and brain stimulation. Being among the first to demonstrate a link between NMDA receptor dysfunction and schizophrenia, he has recently initiated studies on NMDA receptor antagonists, including ketamine and highdose D-cycloserine, in depression treatment, and of brain stimulation methods, including transcranial direct current stimulation. Dr. Javitt has served for over 15 years as a reviewer for NIH grant applications, and is a former chair of the Brain Disorders and Clinicial Neursocience (BDCN) review committee.

Dr. Javitt received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Princeton in 1979 and his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1983.
