Throughout his career, Dr. Goldman’s research has focused on the identification of genetic factors responsible for inherited differences in behavior, and he has authored over 300 papers. His laboratory is currently exploring the genetics of alcoholism and related psychiatric diseases and it is well-known for his work identifying the effects of functional genetic variants on intermediate phenotypes for complex behavioral diseases.

Dr. Goldman received his B.S. from Yale University and his M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch where he also completed residency training in psychiatry. Dr. Goldman joined the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) in 1979 and has served in his current position since 1991. He has also been an adjunct professor of biological sciences at George Washington University since 1987. Past positions include chief of the unit on genetic studies at the Laboratory of Clinical Studies in the NIAAA and staff physician at the National Institute of Mental Health.
