Sackler Professor of Developmental Psychobiology in Psychiatry
Director, Sackler Institute of Columbia University

Dr. Gingrich and his group use a systems approach to better understand normal and abnormal brain function, in particular, the mechanisms that underlie brain and behavior disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety disorders. Their goal is to understand how genetic and epigenetic factors affect behavior and intervening systems such as circuitry, anatomy and physiology. Dr. Gingrich is pursuing several lines of research related to the role of serotonin signaling in the cortex. His lab also has an active program examining the role of the neurotransmitter serotonin on the development of brain circuits that modulate affective and anxiety states. Additionally, the group has developed a mouse model of epigenetic effects of paternal age on behavior and brain function.
Dr. Gingrich received his bachelor’s degree from University of Kansas, and M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Duke University Medical Center.

Who
We Are
The Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is a global nonprofit organization focused on improving the understanding, prevention and treatment of psychiatric and mental illnesses.
Our
Impact
Beginning in 1987, the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation was providing seed money to neuroscientists to invest in “out of the box” research that the government and other sources were unwilling to fund. Today, Brain & Behavior Research Foundation is still the leading, private philanthropy in the world in this space.
