Dr. Buchanan focuses on development and evaluation of pharmacological approaches for schizophrenia treatment. He has conducted clinical trials to clarify the efficacy and side effects profiles of clozapine and other second generation antipsychotic agents. He also studied the adjunctive dopaminergic and glutamatergic agents for persistent negative symptoms treatment and is currently investigating oxytocin for this indication. Dr. Buchanan has been involved in federally-funded initiatives such as the Measurement and Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (MATRICS) project; the organization of the FDA/NIMH workshop to develop guidelines for the conduct of clinical trials of cognitiveenhancing drugs; and the Treatment Units for Research on Neurocognition and Schizophrenia (TURNS) consortium.
Dr. Buchanan earned a B.S. in chemical engineering at Lehigh University and an M.D. from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Upon completion of his psychiatry residency, he spent two years on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in the National Health Services Corps.
