Dr. Meador-Woodruff’s laboratory’s primary research interest is on understanding how different parts of the brain communicate with other parts via a variety of chemical signals, and how this communication is disrupted in schizophrenia. His current focus is on studying the expression of genes associated with glutamatergic neurotransmission (the system involving the neurotransmitter glutamate) within individual cells in the nervous system.

For 25 years before assuming his current post, Dr. Meador-Woodruff was a member of the Department of Psychiatry and the Mental Health Research Institute at the University of Michigan. There, in addition to his research, he pursued a longstanding interest in teaching and mentorship as Director of the University of Michigan’s Psychiatry Residency Research Track, holding one of the first National Institute of Health grants designed to fund such programs.
