Improving Psychotherapy for Mood Disorders

The prevalence of mood disorders has risen in recent years while help-seeking behaviors (either medication or talk therapy) has remained consistently low. This webinar will present recent scientific advances to improve the efficacy of psychosocial treatments for mood and psychotic disorders. The audience will learn about the strengths and weaknesses of current psychotherapies for mood disorders. Two methods currently being investigated by Dr. Weintraub to improve psychotherapies for mood disorders will be discussed: (1) a mobile app used as an adjunct to therapy for adolescents at risk for mood disorders; and (2) psilocybin as an adjunct to psychotherapy for adults with major depression.

Dr. Marc Weintraub is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA. His research interests involve the course, risk factors, and psychosocial treatment of mood and psychotic disorders. His recent research has focused on methods to improve the efficacy of psychosocial treatments for mood and psychotic disorders. Dr. Weintraub developed a multi-family cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for adolescents at high risk for mood and psychotic disorders, and received a career development award from the National Institute of Health to examine how a mobile app can improve the acceptability and adherence to the treatment. With funding from BBRF, Dr. Weintraub’s team is studying CBT as an adjunct for psilocybin treatment to treat major depressive disorder in adults.
