Dr. Stephen Glatt, of the State University of New York, Upstate Medical Center (SUNY Upstate) was awarded the Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Prize for Innovative Schizophrenia Research at the 2010 NARSAD ‘From Discovery to Recovery’ Annual Awards Dinner. This inspiring young scientist is being recognized for his cutting edge psychiatric research to understand the causes of schizophrenia. With the application of new technologies, he is seeking to find biomarkers in the blood that will define the risk factors for this mental illness, thus enabling earlier intervention and treatment, and that will identify avenues for prevention.
Schizophrenia affects about 2.4 million American adults each year according to the National Institute of Mental Health. In addition to his position as Assistant Professor at SUNY Upstate, Dr. Glatt serves as Associate Director of Medical Genetics Research and Director of the Psychiatric Genetic Epidemiology and Neurobiology Laboratory at the University.
